Icon (gr.) - picture
The first name of the icons signified - picture - PAINTED, done in other technique like stone, metal, no metter of the material and the technique of doing. In Cristian art name ICON signifies, firstly, religious Portrait of Christ, saints, as well as picture with the topics from the OLD & NEW TESTIMONY.
In Serbia, icons, according to the historical datas, are mentioned in the XII c.
Biografers of the kings and archbishops, oftenly mention that icons were given as presents to every one that deserved it, icons done in gold and silver, beautified with precious stones.
The most beautiful collection of the Serbian Icons from 12 and 13c. is placed in the Monastery of "HILANDER" in Sveta Gora, Greece.
Today in Belgrade lives and works Djordje Rackov, the best iconoartist, who with his works proves that he precislly taught the Serbian Academic realism, but in the same time he is dedicated also and attached to the traditional Bysantium samples!
